Applying for Financial Aid and FAFSA
Understanding Your Financial Aid Options
Financial aid can include grants, scholarships, loans, work-study opportunities, and state assistance programs. Understanding the different types of aid can help you make informed decisions as you plan for your Rutgers education.
Some forms of aid are based on financial need, while others may recognize academic achievement, leadership, talent, or program eligibility.
- Need-Based Aid: Financial aid based on family income and demonstrated financial need, including federal grants and work-study opportunities.
- Merit-Based Aid: Scholarships or awards that recognize academic achievement, leadership, athletics, or other accomplishments.
- Loans: Money borrowed to help pay educational expenses that are repaid over time, typically with interest.
- Scholarships and Grants: Do not require repayment.
- State Programs: State-supported financial aid opportunities, including New Jersey programs such as TAG and EOF for eligible students.
Apply for Financial Aid: Complete the FAFSA
For U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens, the first step in receiving financial aid at Rutgers is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA information is used to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional aid programs, including grants, loans, and work-study opportunities.
Rutgers school code: 002629
Undocumented Students: New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application
Undocumented students who are not eligible to complete the FAFSA may be eligible for New Jersey state financial aid. Eligible students can apply by completing the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application.
How Financial Aid Works at Rutgers: The Step-by-Step Process
When you complete the FAFSA, Rutgers uses your information to build a financial aid package based on eligibility and need. Aid may include federal grants, state grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities.
Step 1: Complete the FAFSA (Include Rutgers school Code 002629).
Step 2: Review your FAFSA Submission Summary (formerly called the Student Aid Report or SAR).
Step 3: Check your Rutgers Financial Aid Portal and complete any requested documents.
Step 4: Review and accept your financial aid offer.
Step 5: Complete federal loan requirements (if applicable).
If you accept a Federal Direct Loan and are required to do so, complete entrance counseling (first-time borrowers) and sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN).
Students should complete the FAFSA each year to remain eligible for federal, state, and institutional financial aid.
