The school’s largest program prepares skilled direct-service providers to function in both public and private sectors of social welfare, and for advanced social work practice such as administrative leadership roles in the state’s social welfare departments and agencies, and at all levels of government, as well as in the voluntary sector.
The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and includes academic coursework and supervised field practice. Graduates are eligible for certification by the New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners and also for advanced standing if they pursue graduate study in social work.
The major prepares students to enter social work, a profession with a long history of concern and action for the well-being of individuals, families, groups, and communities. Students are prepared for generalist practice, with emphasis on populations at risk.
A minor is required with this major. All students must declare a minor while in the Social Work major.

Potential Career Paths
This major prepares students for professional practice or graduate study in social work and related fields. Social work graduates may start their careers as child, family, or school social workers with human services organizations or state and local government. Graduates may also find positions in public health, mental health, or substance abuse within the healthcare industry. Additionally, social work graduates may become planners and policy makers, and develop programs to address societal issues such as child abuse, homelessness, substance abuse, poverty, and violence.

The off-campus degree in Social Work is designed specifically for students who have completed the Associate of Science, Pre-Social Work degree at Brookdale Community College. Students with Associate Degrees in other fields or degrees from other colleges may not be eligible for admission to this program.
