Public Health

The undergraduate program in Public Health is provided through Rutgers’ Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. As one of the strongest policy schools in the nation, the Bloustein School has the capacity to address local, state, regional, national and international policy and planning issues with expertise and credibility. The School is a leader in such areas as smart growth, transportation planning, workforce development, and environmental health, and builds on its association with research centers in related areas. The Bloustein School is also distinctive in its simultaneous focus on graduate and undergraduate education.

The public health major prepares students for graduate education in public health and for entry-level positions in a broad spectrum of private and public health organizations. Students receive a conceptual understanding of interrelated health, environmental, economic, educational, and social welfare issues.

Potential Career Paths

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, public health professionals work in a wide range of services including infectious disease control, community and global health services, biostatistics and informatics, chronic disease management, environmental/occupational safety, and emergency preparedness. The Public Health program prepares students for a broad variety of planning and management career paths in health care and disease prevention. These positions can be found in business, government, education, nonprofit, and health organizations. Continued study at the graduate level is also an option. 

Admissions Requirements

Admission requirements for the Public Health program are listed as Prerequisites on the Bloustein School website. To pursue the major, students must apply and be admitted to the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. The Bloustein School provides additional information for transfer students on its website. 

Transferring Credits

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey will transfer a maximum of 60 credits or one-half of the total degree credits required for a baccalaureate degree from a NJ county college to a Rutgers degree program for those students who have completed an A.A. or A.S. degree. Please visit the NJ Transfer website at www.njtransfer.org to look up the Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) for any undergraduate major at Rutgers. Students may be awarded up to 90 credits if they are transferring from a four-year institution. 

Ready to Apply

We strongly encourage that students meet with one of our advisors prior to transferring to ensure their eligibility. Students who are ready to transfer to one of our 11 undergraduate programs should fill out the Rutgers Undergraduate Application. When filling out the application, students should indicate that they have earned about 60-119 credits. Otherwise, students may not be able to see our programs as a selectable choice.
